日本を出て既成の価値観をぶっ壊せ！
　私は何より、同世代の大学生に、日本を出て世界を見ることの大切さを伝えたいと思います。大学入学後、これまでハノイ、シンガポール、デリー、ボストン、ニューヨークなどを放浪してきました。来年からは日本の大学を休学し、米国西海岸の大学に留学します。なぜ世界を見ることを勧めるのか。それは、世界を見ることが既成の価値観をぶっ壊すことにつながるからです。

「集団主義」、「安定志向」といったものに毒されていないか？
　小中高と平凡な学園生活を送ってきた学生なら、他人と似たような価値観を持っているはずです。そして大抵その価値観は「集団主義」、「安定志向」といったものに毒されがちです。そうした価値観をぶっ壊すことができる最初のチャンス、それが大学時代と考えます。そして既成の価値観をぶっ壊す一番の近道、それは日本を出て世界を見ることです。残念ながらバックパックしたから、留学したからといって自分が本当にやりたいことが見つかるとは限りません。ただ、既成の価値観を粉々にすることはできます。まずはそこから始めてみてはいかがでしょうか。

世界に目を向けたきっかけは"司馬遼太郎"
　私が世界に目を向けはじめたきっかけは司馬遼太郎の著書を高校時代に読んだことです。特に影響を受けたのは幕末もの。「世に棲む日日」「竜馬がゆく」「峠」。これらの作品の主人公はみな若い時期に故郷を離れ、旅をしました。彼らは外の世界から刺激を受けることで藩によって植え付けられた価値観を壊し、自分が動乱の世にあって何をなすべきかを考え続けてきたのです。その結果、彼らは大事を成すことができました。幕末に活躍したのは藩が敷いたレールに乗っかって安泰な人生を歩もうとしていた藩官僚ではなく、レールからはずれ、諸国を巡って自己鍛錬に励んだ志士たちだったのです。激動の日本にあって自分も志士のごとくありたい、その一念が私を海外へと、休学へと駆り立てることになりました。

海外で修行し、日本へ戻れ！
　私の海外志向は日本にいては放射能が危険だから、財政が深刻だから、というネガティブなものではありません。日本は、たしかに深刻な状態にあります。そんな中で若者は何ができるでしょうか。私は、来るべき日に備え自己鍛錬に励むことだと思います。修行の場としてはやはり海外が最適でしょう。海外で既成の価値観を破壊し、ゼロベースで知識や経験を積み上げていくのです。

来るべき日に備え、自己鍛錬を！
「坂の上の雲」、明治期の日本を描いた司馬遼太郎の著作です。作中で活躍する軍人、政治家の多くは留学経験者でした。彼らは若いときに来るべき日に備え海外で最新の知識を学び、これからの日本をどう動かしていくかを考え続けたのです。明治、大正期の日本の栄光を築き上げたのは海外で自己鍛錬に励み、再び日本に舞い戻った若者たちだったのです。

　日本が危機にある今こそ、現代の若者は彼らのように日本を出て自己鍛錬に励み、再び日本に戻って修行した成果を存分に発揮するときなのではないでしょうか。

To Leave And Return To Japan

Significantly Change Your Ready-Made Sense of Values by Leaving Japan
I would like to emphasise to university students who are the same generation as me, the importance of observing what is happening in the world by leaving Japan. After enrolling in university, I travelled to Hanoi, Singapore, Deli, Boston, New York etc. I joined a foreign exchange program to study at university in West Coast America. Therefore, I recommend travelling abroad to university students because by doing so, you can change significantly your ready-made sense of values.

Are You Tainted by "Collectivism" or "Stability Orientation"?
If you spent a normal student life in your primary, junior-high and high school days, I can imagine that you would have a similar sense of values and process of thinking. Almost all of them are tainted by what are called "collectivism" or "stability orientation". I must emphasise that attending university is the first opportunity for us to challenge such thoughts. Furthermore, the quickest way to do this is by leaving Japan and seeing the world. Unfortunately I can't promise your foreign exchange experience or backpacking will determine what you really want to do in the future, but I can promise you can challenge, and possibly redefine, your ready-made sense of values.

My First Inspiration To Become Interested In The World Was The Famous Japanese Novelist, The Late Ryotaro Shiba
In reading works of Ryotaro Shiba when I went to high school, I became interested in the world. I was especially impressed by the work of end of Edo period (around 1850~1870), "Yo ni sumu hibi", "Ryoma ga yuku" and "Touge. In those works, the heroes left their hometown in their youth and travelled.

As they were affected by the stimulus from "outside", they abandoned their ready-made ideologies taught by their clan and considered what ideologies they should realise in the world of upheaval. As a result, they were able to realise great things.
The people who changed the society in the end of Edo period were not bureaucrats whose lives were obeying the rules, but the ambitious people who rejected such a restricted life to train and travel for themselves. I want to be ambitious even in such an unstable environment in Japan. This ideal drove me to study abroad.

Train Yourself Abroad And Return To Japan
My "overseas orientation" is not conceived from a negative aspect, such as radioactive contamination or financial crisis. Of course Japan faces very serious times, so please consider what the youth can do for it's future. My objective is training myself for the near future. The most appropriate environment seems to be overseas. Going abroad, challenging my ready-made sense of values, acquiring new knowledge and many other experiences.

Train Yourself For The Near Future
"Saka no ue no kumo", a novel by Ryotaro Shiba, is depicting the end of Edo period. Many of the characters in the novel experienced studying abroad. In their youth, they travelled abroad, acquiring the latest knowledge for the near future and continued to visualise how to lead this country. The people who made Japan from 1870's to 1920's flourish were the youth who travelled abroad, trained themselves and returned to Japan.
As Japan faces crisis, now is the time for young Japanese to travel abroad to undertake training, then return to Japan to implement what they have learnt.
