「海外での出会いと発見が、僕を変えた」

ポーランドで感じたこと
大学２年から3年に上がる春休み（2010年2～4月）に、僕はAIESECのプログラムを通して、ポーランドの文化教育研修に参加した。当時から漠然と、「日本の文化」といったものに興味があり、海外でそれらがどのように伝わっているのか、というのが知りたかったからだ。
そこで目の当たりにしたのが、「日本に興味がある人、多すぎる」ということ。接していたのは主に高校生だったが、サブカルチャーをはじめとして、僕が知らないようなこともどんどん聞いてくる。
それまで漠然と「海外で仕事したいな」と思っていた僕だったが、この二ヶ月でその考えは「日本で生まれ育った身として、海外に日本の魅力を伝えたい」という"軸"に変化した。
国内インターンへの関わり
インターンから帰国後、僕は先に述べたような"軸"をどのように体現するか、模索中だった。その時に偶然知り合ったのが、とあるベンチャー企業の経営者。「日本の伝統工芸品を海外で販売する」というミッションを掲げており、僕の考えに合致する部分が多かった。お会いした時は、会社を立ち上げて間もなかったのだが、インターンとして事業に関わらせていただくようになった。
敷かれたレールへの違和感あり、就活やらず、「起業」の選択肢へ・・
本来なら、就職活動が始まる大学３年の10月から、僕は本格的にインターンに関わり始めた。もともと、就職活動を始めとする「敷かれたレール」には強い違和感を持っていたのだが、経営者と間近に接する中で、漠然と「起業」という選択肢もあるのかと感じ始めたのがこの時期だった。
命の数だけ生き方は存在することを実感した
結局、去年の秋からインターンを始めて、僕も４年生になった。プライベートでは、SNSを通して様々な生き方をされている方にもお会いすることができた。その中で、一番強く印象に残っていることは、つまるところ「命の数だけ生き方は存在する」ということだ。
インターンで、出張して国内の職人の方達にお会いする機会があったのだが、彼らの物作りへのこだわりを知ると、圧倒される。一日で限られた数の製品だけしか作れないし、それも全て手作りである。そして、それらで生計を立てている。普通の就活サイトを通して知る会社に、これだけのこだわりを持つ企業がはたしてあるだろうか。職人の方というのは、「大学→就職」という"レール"の上では、殆ど絶対に出会えない人々であるかもしれない。しかし、そのような方々と実際にお会いして魅力を感じ、僕たちの知らない世界で、無数の「生き方」があることを実感した一年だった。
これから奈良で生きようと思う
さて、来年3月には大学は卒業だ。いままで多くの人たちの生き方に触れた上で、僕がこの先、どのような生き方をしていくのか、ということにも触れなければならない。
僕自身、まだまだ悩みと不安は多いが、卒業後は、故郷の奈良で、外国人観光客に対してアプローチをしていこうと模索中である。奈良の魅力を、一人でも多くの外国人に伝えていきたいと考えている。

My thoughts And Feelings Whilst Staying In Poland
From February 2010 to April 2012, when I was 20 years old, I joined a global internship, staying in Poland for two months. I visited high schools and took classes to lecture about Japanese culture. The reason I joined such an internship was that I had a vague interest for what are called "Japanese Cultures" and I wanted to see how they are recognized in foreign countries.
The most impressive thing I noticed was that many people have an interest in Japan. The number was far higher than I had previously imagined. I mainly met with high school students and they asked me questions about Japan, for example about foods, politics and pop cultures. Many of their questions were beyond my knowledge, so I was disappointed I could not answer all of their questions.
This experience absolutely changed my dream. Before I went to Poland, I vaguely dreamed of working abroad, but it has now changed. As I was born and grew up in Japan, passing on the attractiveness of Japan overseas is my mission.
An Opportunity To Take An Internship In Japan
Coming back to Japan, I was looking for the ideal way to realize my mission. Fortunately I had an opportunity to meet with a CEO of a venture firm. He told me the business description in detail and I found it was what I really wanted to do. It is selling Japanese authentic and traditional artifacts abroad. Though he had just started the business, I got an opportunity to take an internship there.
Feeling Unsure For My Decided Future I Began To Consider Entrepreneurship
In Japan, almost all university students start job-hunting activities from October of their 3rd grade (this tendency changed last year so that they start from December). I felt very unsure about this system, so I decided to continue internship in spite of doing job-hunting activities. I thought it was very strange everyone started thinking about their future at the same time and in the same ways! I made a specific choice to do business for myself. I am really grateful to the CEO whom allowed me a precious experience of seeing and engaging in "real business".
Each Person Has His/Her Own Way To Live
Taking the internship for a half year, I became 4th grade. (This essay was written a half year ago. Now I have graduated and work). In my private life, I met with many people via SNS. Each of them has his/her own philosophy, sense of value, and way of life. As I had met mostly corporate employees, those encounters showed me that each person has their own way of life.
I met with some traditional craftsmen in my internship and their orientation for their works was overwhelming. They can make limited number of crafts and all of them are hand-made. Surprisingly, they earn a living by it. Can we find such firms of specialty in the usual job-hunting endeavor? The craftsmen are those who we are unlikely to meet if we find jobs via advertisements or Internet and continue living as usual. However, this year is very precious and priceless for me to comprehend that there exist countless ways of living in this world.
My Next Stage Is Living In Nara, My Hometown
I know I have to tell you which way I chose after my graduation. Actually, I'm planning to go back to Nara. Throughout my university days, my dream and mission has changed. My next stage is presenting the unknown Nara's attractiveness all over the world. Of course I have many anxieties, but I have decided to go this way.
