A Pocket Diary Project In Bangladesh;
Supporting Dreams of Bangladeshi Artisan and Ladies Making it
~ What I Have Learned Throughout the Blundered Experience~

Chihiro ENDO
Representative of diary project "SHOPNO GHOR"

I started my gap year by going out of my own "narrow environment"
On March 2011, I enthusiastically visited Bangladesh, the poorest country in Asia. However, I hadn't made concrete plans deciding where I would work, stay and how long I would stay there. The only thing I had decided was to seek opportunities to try and measure my own ability as one single person, without belonging to any organizations, networks and environments. That was the very moment I made a choice of taking my gap year - grasping a new way of life for myself - by getting away from the "world" which society has already created.

An encounter with a lady at a suburban farming village from Dacca
Without clinging to my past experience, purpose, dream etc, I tried as many things as I could, such as taking lectures at Dacca university and taking internship at a Japanese company. My friend invited me a suburban farming village near Dacca. This opportunity gave me a defining encounter with the ladies who live there. These ladies are far more energetic and robust, than I could have ever imagined.
They were born into and have grown up in a much more harsh and severe environment than in Japan, but they all have such vitality. Looking at and talking with them, I started to consider what would be the authentic happiness of life for women. At the same time my passion to create a society in which Asian women can play an active role got much stronger.
This encounter was one of the inspirations for launching a "Pocket Diary Project Supporting Women's Dreams" with Bangladeshi artisans. This opportunity also helped me develop into a much stronger character.

I launched a project of making a pocket diary with the idea "I want to use such diary!"
Whilst at a café, the idea occurred to me to make a pocket diary with Bangladeshi artisans that supports women's dream. At that time I was very troubled by the problem of what kind of product I could create incorporating the theme of women's business.
One day I looked at my diary, in which I noted some sentences everyday, in order to summarize my growth, as when I go abroad there are far more feelings and events to document. I noticed I used my diary everyday with a wish that there had been more kinds of such notes available to me. I thought if I could make an adaptation of the diary to support the women who challenge and chase their dreams, if they use it everyday, it could have a strong impact on the women's way of life itself. Suddenly having confidence in my idea, I decided to return to Japan in order to gather people and to prepare funds and information.

Meeting with people via SNS, my plan went along smoothly.
I used SNS to meet with many people. Fortunately, I could meet and talk with university students of fine arts and business advisors. I also could gather information by questionnaires. One week later I returned to Bangladesh to look for my partners who would provide a leather factory and printing office. Fortunately one person invited me a nice factory. Then I started to make the product with Bangladeshi in a trial and error way. The time span was only 3 months, so we had to hurry. Finally what I dreamed of took shape. As I hurried too much and couldn't look at my situation calmly, I mass-produced them and made an official contract with the factory.

In a hurried situation, I was too selfish.
Until that time the project went smoothly, but my decisions were always selfish. I didn't consider other staffs' opinions. Those hurried decisions and actions created very serious cracks amongst the staff and organizations.
My first failure was that I lost the trust from business advisors. Two working Japanese helped me as advisors at that time. When I met with them for the first time, they told me that the contents of my project protocol were too poor to be able to advise but that they supported my passion and vision. While I stayed in Bangladesh, they spared time to make contact with me. But I never planned ahead and I was very disorganised. They scolded me, unhappy that I wasn't considering my members and partners. Unfortunately, they finally left my project.
My second failure occurred when the partnership between the members became estranged. They said that they'd follow me whatever happens, but my reckless plans and actions made them exhausted. On the last meeting, we made a conclusion that this project would create nothing but blunder. Last autumn, this project was actually broken up.
My third failure was funding. When I went ahead with my project, I couldn't prepare any accurate estimates. When I paid it, I had incurred unexpected expenses. What was worse, the day before I paid the factory, the money was stolen from a midnight bus. Because of my panic, I chose the worst way, I loaned the money from my friends and somehow kept the time of payment. Looking back at my countless failures, I am ashamed of bothering so many people around me.
As advisors and members left my project, all that remained in front of me were a large amount of debt and 500 leather covers. I couldn't consider my future plans at this point so went back to Japan with the covers and regrets.

"I want to complete this project no matter what" - were the thoughts I had in my mind.
After coming back to Japan, I became a lifeless shell and spent several days without vigor. What I did in Bangladesh was only failures. What did I do there? Why did I take a leave of absence from school? Everyday I constantly struggled with regrets.
Losing everything however, I noticed a very important feeling I had, I wanted to realise my dream, which was to complete this project. Even if I had been miserable and shameful, even if I had made mistakes and even if people laughed at me. I actually had the most important things, the members in preparations, who believed and helped me. They were the university students of fine arts, who I met in the beginning. They were the inspiration of my project, I was able to share my passion with them. They had believed in me, ten long months ago.

My dream is to establish a firm where women can work most happily in Asia
Action makes miracles. I restarted the project. I met with the members almost everyday. First we postponed the deadline one year and clarified the target and our vision.
In the university, we treated the project in our seminar as an official research project. The number of advisors increased. Exhibiting the project on "Ready For" (one of the cloud funding services), we could prepare funds. The project was in the manufacturing process in March 2012. After two months the whole design of the diary was finished and the products were being printed in Bangladesh. Though I had no resource, network and members in the project at the beginning of 2012, we could finally reach the publicity and market development phase. We had experienced a business reorganisation and it had taken a long time to get there.
This project's beginning was my simple idea. The project was begun by only me at first, and finally changed into product making, by involving art-college students, our university students, business advisors and Bangladeshi artisans. With many people's help, over 50 people support this project as sponsors nowadays. The whole number of supporting people is over 100.
Surprisingly, the 100 members around me would have never met with me, if I hadn't decided to take a leave of absence from university, if I hadn't gone to Bangladesh and if I had given up my project completely. I strong believe that making actions is same as making miracles.

I cannot change my life for another.
I cannot say whether this project will succeed or fail in the future, but what I can confidentially say now is that I have followed my own path, gaining my own experiences. This is an experience no other person can exchange with me. When I was in the 4th grade of university, I dived into an extraordinary situation. I feared that my possibilities, future and experience of life would be limited. I cast off my comfortable daily life in Tokyo and decided to take risks. Now I actually feel my possibilities have broadened infinitely.
I have two dreams. One is to establish a company in Bangladesh, which women can work most happily in the world. Second is to present the works of the art college's students to the world. For example, I imagine their works will be displayed in the first-class chandlery stores and stationary store in Italy or France. Not only my dream but also the member's dreams exist in this diary project.
I dream everyday that through innovation I can make miracles for the women in front of us. I really appreciate your support in my progress.
