「留学で変わった私の人生」

３カ国語、４カ国語しゃべるの当たり前の留学生
「留学生の間では、４ヶ国語話せるのがステータス。３カ国語は話せるのは当たり前だから」
私の大学生活はそんな衝撃的な言葉で始まりました。現在通っている国際教養学部では、多くの留学生が学んでいます。
特に、韓国人の学生は入学当初から「英語・日本語・母国語」が堪能な人も多く、私が選択した中国語の授業では、多くの韓国人が4ヶ国語目を取得するために頑張っていました。
中国へ、行って暮らして変わった中国へのイメージ
そんな彼らに衝撃を受け決意した中国への留学。
語学習得のために中国留学を決意した私ですが、この留学は私の人生を大きく変えるきっかけになりました。
中国に留学に行く前、私の中国に対するイメージは決してよくありませんでした。日本で見ていた中国に対する報道は「反日」や「他人に無関心」など否定的な報道ばかり。
しかし、中国留学後、私の中国に対するイメージは180度変わりました。それは一方、中国人が日本に来て住んで変わるイメージもあるだろうということも思いました。
日本に関心を持っている中国人
現地の中国人と仲良くなってみると「世話焼き」で優しい人も多く、「風邪を引いた」とメールしただけで、体に良い食品を部屋まで届けてくれたり、仲良くなってすぐに実家に招待され、豪勢な料理でもてなしてくれたり。
また、日本のアニメや文化に興味を持っている中国人に「日本語を教えて欲しい」と頼まれたりと、日本に関心を持っている人が多いことに驚かされました。
メディアの報道はすべてではない
これらは、日本のメディア報道を見ていた時には、考えもしなかったこと。私はこの体験から改めて、「物事は自分の目で見ないと分からない。」「メディアの報道は一面でしかない」に気付かされました。
「普通」って何だろう？
また、海外に出て感じたことは、日本の「普通」が、海外の「普通」とは限らない。
逆に、日本の「普通じゃない」が、海外では「普通」かも知れない。
例えば、ヨーロッパ旅行の際は、日本の残業の話をすると「そんなの変！どうして日本人はストライクしないの？」と、聞かれたり、日本にいる際の癖で自分のことを謙遜して話していたら、不思議な顔をされたり・・・。
人生に決まったレールなんかない！
留学に行く前の私は、人生とは「道が決まっているレールのようなもの」と思っていました。でも、海外に行くと、30になってから大学に通い始めたり、6年以上いろいろな国をさ迷っている人がいたり。そんな人たちの話を聞くうちに気付いたことは「決まったレールなんてない」ということでした。
「決まったレール」は自分の思いこみで、実際は自分から動けば、いくらでも自分で「人生のレール」をひくことができる。
私はまた中国へ
中国留学、海外ひとり旅で考え方がガラリと変わった私は、日本に帰ってからも自分から積極的に行動するようになり、留学前よりも充実した時間を過ごせるようになりました。
その結果、雑誌やフリーペーパーへの掲出、生放送番組の出演、本の出版が決まるなど、留学前には考えられなかったことが実現しました。また、「卒業してすぐに海外で働きたい」という夢も叶い、今年の夏からは念願だった上海での勤務が決まっています。
人が変わるきっかけは、人によって違うと思います。でも、私の場合は「留学」がきっかけでした。「もし留学に行ってなかったら。。。」と想像すると、ちょっと怖くなります。必ず行けば、なにか得られるものがあるので、できるならお勧めします。
最後は、一人旅中に出会った方から言われた言葉で締めたいと思います。
「あなたは他の人と同じ様な人生を送りたいの？それとも、自分の送りたい人生を送りたいの？」

Foreign Students Commonly Use More Than Three Different Languages
Speaking different languages creates status among foreign students; however it is common for them to speak three different languages.
When I discovered this, my university life had just begun.
There are many foreign students studying at the university, School of International Liberal Studies, where I belong, especially many Korean students who are fluent in speaking English, Japanese and their native language. They are trying to master Chinese as their fourth language in the class I also took.
Staying In China Changed My Image Of China
Those students were inspiration for me to go to China for study. I decided to go to China to gain Chinese skills, but this experience was a great opportunity for me to make a big change in my life.
My image for China was not very good before going there. I saw and read only negative news about China such as China was "anti-Japan/Japanese" or of "the ignorance of Chinese for other people". After I stayed there however, my image of China completely changed. This showed me that Chinese people would have a different image of Japanese by coming to Japan.
The Chinese Having An Interest In Japan
As I made friends with the Chinese, I realized there are many Chinese who are caring and have heartwarming personalities. When I caught a cold and sent a message to them, they delivered healthy foods to my door. When I met for the first time with them, we became good friends at once and they invited me their house to serve a superb dinner. I was also surprised that I was asked to teach Japanese by Chinese who have interests in Japanese anime and cultures.
Mass media's coverage and news are not everything.
I had never realised these facts when I had watched the Japanese mass media's coverage and news. I learned again that things couldn't be understood until we see them with our own eyes and that the mass media's news is only reporting one aspect of the entire picture.
What is "commonness"?
I also felt that what is regarded as "common" in Japan isn't necessarily so abroad and vice versa. When I travelled around Europe for example, I explained work in Japan to the foreign people I met and they asked, "why don't the workers strike against companies?" or, when I humbled myself as I do in Japan, they couldn't understand why I did so.
There Exists No Predestined Path In One's Life
Before I went to study abroad, I had thought that life follows a predestined path. As I had gone abroad, I met many people who were going to university at 30 years old, or travelling to many countries over several years. Meeting with such people, I noticed there are no predestined paths through one's life. Such predestined paths are merely assumptions. Through taking actions, everyone can create their own "paths" through their life.
My Return To China.
Being totally changed by my ideas and experiences of studying and backpacking abroad, I took many actions. As a result, I've come to be able to spend more fulfilling days since I was in China. Those actions brought me to be interviewed for magazines and free-papers, attend a live broadcast and also publish a book. I never imagined such things before I went to China. Furthermore, my dream to work abroad has come true. I will be working in Shanghai from this summer.
The opportunity to make a change varies between people. My opportunity was studying in China. I imagine and fear for what my life would have been if I hadn't gone to study in China. I recommend going to China as you may also gain something.
Finally I would like to introduce a phrase that was told to me by a traveller who I met whilst travelling.
"Do you want to live an alternative life for other people or do you want to life your OWN life?"
